Ginger empowers ING Bank to offer a complete whitelabel payment service provider (PSP) solution to their merchants

payment service provider

ING Bank, one of the largest banks in the world, uses Ginger’s modular platform to offer an ING Bank-branded online payments solution to their Dutch and Belgium merchants. Each client segment had their own specific payment preferences, but Ginger’s flexible platform empowered ING to get a tailored solution for each target market in a matter of weeks. By using Ginger’s off-the-shelf solutions, difficult edge case discussions on reporting, onboarding, and monitoring were easy, and gateway connections were already in place. This reduced their costs and time-to-market significantly.

Becoming a Payment Service Provider: complex and time-consuming

ING Bank, Best Bank in the World 2017, had the ambition to become a Payment Service Provider (PSP), so it could offer a better customer experience to its merchants. The bank decided not to build a solution from scratch in-house, as this would have taken them years without the right people, knowledge of eCommerce, and technical skills. So, instead of building a solution themselves, they teamed up with a large established payment provider. After a painful process the bank came to the conclusion that it didn’t work because the chosen partner wasn’t focused on servicing banks or large FIs. After a new analysis, they decided to partner with a Fintech company known for its technical expertise and state of the art payment platform; Ginger.

ING had to jump through some hoops to get the internal processing, internal reporting, and support at a proper level. Lucky for them they hardly had to think about the normal PSP business, such as digital onboarding, monitoring, transaction processing, and plugins. Instead they could use Ginger’s battle tested solution.

Starting a PSP from scratch is a huge challenge. Competition is fierce and consumers are very demanding. It’s about money, so no mistakes are allowed. A significant amount of research, legal work, and development is required to get everything set up. And even then, success isn’t guaranteed. It requires a large investment in time and money, weighing heavily on your resources and time-to-market. Therefore, ING made the choice to use Ginger’s modular payment platform; one integrated solution that uses the bank’s branding and frees them of the technical and financial burden and associated setup times, so the bank can focus on sales, marketing, and customer success.

ING-branded online checkout with Ginger’s whitelabel PSP solution

By using Ginger’s whitelabel PSP solution, ING was able to offer online checkout functionalities for their Dutch and Belgium SME’s in just weeks, skipping a significant chunk of product development that otherwise would have taken years to complete.

The modular payment platform enables ING to add a totally new product range to their service delivery, as Ginger is continually adding new features and payment products to its platform. New products will become available for every client and partner using the platform.

Joined team effort, fast delivery, and tailor made

After initial assessment of the requirements, Ginger joined forces with ING’s dedicated business and tech team to get ING’s version of the platform up and running and to get it connected with their preferred third parties such as, Omnipay and equensWorldline.

The PaaS solution is managed by Ginger and operated by ING. We continually keep making improvements and adding functionalities. We make sure it keeps running smoothly, so you can use it to offer a great customer experience. ING offers three different versions to three different customer types; KassaCompleet (Dutch SME), Epay (Belgium SME) and ING Checkout (Corporate).

“Ginger has a lot of online payments knowledge. Their platform allowed us to get exactly the solution that we want for different customer groups and it allowed us to move really fast. We even have different offerings and portals for different customer groups.

We really can focus our attention on delivering great experiences for our customers.”
